The Marla Sportfishing Boats
operation is one of the oldest and most respected charter boat companies
in the Puerta Vallarta area. Originally based out of nearby La Cruz de
Huanacaxtle, it started as a one man operation with Capt. Chicano Osuna.
Traditionally, charter boats fished the Bahia de Banderas, the
large bay that Puerto Vallarta sits on, but Capt. Chicano began
exploring outside of the bay and began running out to Roca
Corbetena, a rock about 17 miles offshore of Punta de Mita, the
Northernmost point of the bay. He pioneered live bait fishing in the
area, the technique used by most boats fishing there today. His
operation has now grown to a fleet of three boats, each operated by one
of his sons, Danny, Scott and Alonso. Big Game Fishing there has
expanded to include El Banco, another 17 miles past Corbetena. Catches
of big yellowfin are common with 300 lb.
plus fish caught regularly. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin
and Sailfish are also in abundance at different times of the season.
Marla's three boats: Marla II, Marla III and Arca de Noe now operate out
of Nuevo Vallarta, an excellent port located about 15 minutes from
the airport and surrounded by luxury hotels and resorts. The Paradise
Village is one of the best and most convenient resorts available. It has
a marina where your fishing boat can pick you up. No need for a rental
car or taxi. All of the Marla 's boats have new twin cummins
diesels and will get you to and from the fishing grounds at 20 plus
knots. All boats have tuna tubes and very good tackle (inadequate tackle
does not last long around here!) Rates for four persons to Corbetena or
El Banco is $750 US for 10 hours - $850 US for 12
hours.
