Blue Marlin Catch Statistics

      On the "Billy B"

     Gulf of Mexico

              Billy B - 46' Merritt

Here are the statistics for the last 11 years on our 46' Merritt, Billy B. I know many  places around the world average more blue marlin numbers than the Gulf of Mexico; so several seasons were required to compile a large enough data base to justify the results. All data is for Blue Marlin only.

My lure hook-up ratio has stayed consistently high since 1995, when I first began developing this new system. The increase in catches using this system was dramatic and consistent. My overall lure hook-up ratio for the past 11 seasons is 69%, 127 blues out of 184 strikes.

Most marlin fishermen would consider my lures medium  to small in size, with heads from about 1.75 in. to 1 in. in diameter. The heads are short and tapered, which I believe produces a better hook-up ratio. Small lead inserts keep these custom heads "keeled" to stabilize them. Special slotted rubber plugs are attached to the back of the lure to orient the hook to ride straight up.

You can't expect to have a consistent hook-up RATIO if there is nothing consistent about the way your lure runs.

By designing a lure that consistently runs upright, with the hook in a favorable position, I  have achieved a very successful hook-up ratio.

I know most fishermen are allergic to change and this system throws out a lot of traditional ideas and concepts. As strange as my Stinger hook system may seem, it has made a tremendous difference in my catch ratio, as my statistics show.

By the way, many fisherman don't keep a log and they "think" they have a better hook-up ratio (or catch more fish) than they really do. Keep a log.  It's the only way to really know what's going on. It will make you a better fisherman and will show you what works and what doesn't. Click below to see my fishing log page.
